Carjacking suspect in custody after crashes vehicle into a tree in St. Petersburg

Officers from the St. Petersburg Police Department arrested 25-year-old Antwon Cummings of St. Petersburg following a crash at 28th Street S and 54th Avenue at approximately 7:35 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2024.

Tampa Police were investigating a carjacking case when they tracked a silver 2022 Nissan Almita vehicle to Emerson Avenue S in St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg Police were notified and began to join the pursuit. The suspect collided with one officer’s cruiser on Fairfield Avenue S, and air support began to monitor the vehicle’s southerly movement.

At times, the suspect drove southbound in the northbound lanes of 34th Street, putting other motorists at risk.

The suspect ultimately collided with a tree at 28th Street S and 54th Avenue S and was taken into custody. He was transported to a local hospital with unspecified injuries.

He is facing charges of Leaving the scene of a crash involving property, Fleeing and eluding, Carjacking x2 with a firearm, and no/improper license. Other charges are possible.
