On October 1st at 1:22 AM, the Florida Highway Patrol received reports from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office of a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of SR-589 near Gunn Highway. State Trooper Ron Evans, a 13 year veteran, was patrolling the Veterans Expressway (SR-589) northbound just north of SR-54 when he received the call of the wrong-way driver. Evans immediately turned, responded to the area and arrived near the 16 milepost southbound. Evans pulled to the shoulder and awaited the wrong-way driver who appeared shortly thereafter. Upon observing a white 2012 Nissan SUV, Evans turned and conducted a traffic stop on the driver who stopped immediately on the shoulder at 1:28 AM. Minutes later, Evans arrested an extremely intoxicated and disoriented Maria Bolivar, 31 of Oldsmar, for DUI and driving on the wrong side of a divided highway. Bolivar stated she was coming from a bar along MacDill Avenue and headed to her Oldsmar home. She was delivered to the Hillsborough County Jail where she refused to provide a breath test.
