Driver Charged with DUI Manslaughter After Killing Motorcyclist in Hillsborough County

At approximately 3:57 p.m., 52 year-old Jorge Alberto Mejia Perez of Plant City was was traveling westbound in a 2000 Nissan Maxima on Knights Griffin Road approaching SR-39.

74 year-old Robert Eugene Shook of New Matamoras, Ohio was traveling northbound on a 1990 Honda Motorcycle on SR-39 approaching Knights Griffin Road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Perez failed to stop at a red traffic signal, entered the intersection of the two roadways and the path of Shook.

Following the arrival of EMS personnel and FHP Corporal Neil Browning, Perez began to flee the scene of the crash on foot.

Corporal Browning gave chase on foot and soon thereafter apprehended Perez.

Shook who was wearing a helmet was transported to Lakeland Regional Hospital where he died from his injuries

Perez was charged with DUI Manslaughter, Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving a Death, and Driving with No License Involving a Death.
