Driver dead in rollover crash overnight in Indian Rocks

Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s office along with crews from Pinellas Suncoast Fire Rescue responded to a rollover crash early Monday morning.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Monday, March 8, 2021 on the west side of the Indian Rocks Bridge.

The crash killed 44 year-old Miguel A. Gonzalez. Gonzalez was a Sergeant with the Florida Department of Corrections and was assigned to the Sumter Correctional Institution in Bushnell, FL.

According to investigators, deputies arrived to the scene and discovered an overturned Ford F-150 with 44-year-old Miguel Gonzalez near the vehicle. Gonzalez was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators say Gonzalez was driving westbound on Indian Rocks Bridge when for unknown reasons he lost control of the vehicle and struck a concrete barrier, partially ejecting him out of the passenger front window.

As the Ford continued westbound against the barrier wall, the truck impacted several portions of the metal railing on top of the barrier wall. Gonzalez was fully ejected from the vehicle onto the curb, along the north side of the roadway, at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and East Gulf Boulevard. The Ford continued westbound, went onto the curb and sidewalk, struck a palm tree and a set of Pinellas County Junction signs, then overturned on its passenger side in front of 300 5th Avenue North. Gonzalez was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle.

The roadway reopened at approximately 2 p.m. after an extensive cleanup operation.

The investigation continues.
