Driver in custody following a fatal hit and run crash in St. Petersburg

Police have now located the driver involved in a fatal hit and run crash.

On Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 10:14 a.m. police responded to a hit and run crash between a stolen Mercedes and a Malibu at 9th Avenue South and 40th Street South.

The driver of the stolen car fled the scene.

The female driver of the Chevy Malibu was seriously injured and her passenger, a 27 year old Saniya Daxon, died later at the hospital.

The 9th Avenue and 40th Street South intersection will remain closed for several hours for the investigation.

Thanks to tips from the public, 19 year-old Keshawn Long was arrested on five charges for the January 18th hit-and-run crash that killed Saniya Daxon, and injured another.

Long faces Vehicular Homicide, Leaving Scene of a Crash Involving Injury, Leaving Scene of a Crash Involving Death, Operating Without a Driver’s License Causing Death and Auto Theft charges.

The investigation into this crash is ongoing and additional charges may be filed at a later time. 

Long was already in jail on auto theft charges un-related to this crash.
