A deadly hit-and-run crash on Interstate 75 in Manatee County has resulted in the arrest of a suspect following a detailed investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to an arrest report, troopers were notified at approximately 7:06 a.m. on April 20, 2026, of a fatal crash on I-75 southbound near mile marker 220. Investigators arrived on scene around 8:25 a.m. and observed a large debris field, an overturned semi-truck lying on its right side across multiple lanes and the median, and a damaged Chevrolet Trailblazer nearby.
Witnesses told investigators a black Ford Mustang had been driving recklessly prior to the crash. Statements indicate the vehicle was traveling at high speed, cutting off other drivers, tailgating, and making frequent lane changes. Video obtained by investigators confirmed the behavior and captured the sequence of the crash.
Based on the investigation, the Mustang—identified as a 2022 Ford Mustang—was traveling in the inside lane and attempted to change lanes into the center lane. During the maneuver, it struck a Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling alongside it. The impact pushed the Trailblazer into the outside lane, where it collided with a Volvo semi-truck.

The semi-truck was redirected toward the shoulder, where the driver attempted to regain control. The vehicle then overturned onto its right side and slid across all southbound lanes. During the crash sequence, the cab struck a guardrail.
The driver of the semi-truck, identified as 34-year-old Stavan Albert Facey, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
After the collision, the Mustang briefly stopped but then drove between vehicles and fled southbound on I-75, leaving the scene.
Later that day, investigators received information that the suspected vehicle was located at a facility in Venice associated with the Atlanta Braves. Troopers responded to the location and located a dark gray 2022 Ford Mustang GT registered to Jonathan Matos Morales. The vehicle showed damage consistent with the crash, including damage to the right side and paint transfer matching the Trailblazer.
Troopers made contact with Matos Morales later that evening. After being read his Miranda rights, he agreed to speak with investigators and provided a sworn statement. He told troopers he was attempting to change lanes and avoid a vehicle in front of him when the crash occurred. He stated he became scared after the incident and left the scene.
Investigators noted that video evidence contradicted his claim that he stopped after the crash.
Jonathan Matos Morales was arrested at approximately 11:17 p.m. on April 20, 2026, and transported to the Manatee County Jail.
Matos Morales is a former Minor League Prospect for the Atlanta Falcons.
The crash remains under investigation.
