Gulfport Police detain woman after she intentionally drives her vehicle into the water

Officers from the Gulfport Police Department were able to detain a woman after she drove her vehicle into the water.

On May 8, 2022 at approximately 6:00 a.m., officers with the Gulfport Police
Department and crews from the Gulfport Fire Rescue responded to the area of 58th St S and Shore Blvd S due to reports of a vehicle in the water and a female that was screaming. The reports were that she drove into the water intentionally.

The female was located in the water and with assistance from the Gulfport Fire Department, she was pulled out. While walking to the ambulance, she broke away from rescue personnel and pulled a knife out from under her shirt, placing it to her own neck.

Officers attempted to speak with the female, but she did not comply with commands to put the knife down. Officers were forced to use a less lethal munition (rubber projectile) in an attempt to disarm her and eliminate the threat to herself.

The female was taken into custody under a Baker Act and sustained no additional injuries other than a minor welt. The vehicle was removed from the water.
