Investigators say impairment likely after pedestrian killed in Treasure Island crash

Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate after a crash critically injured a pedestrian at Gulf Boulevard and 1st Street East in Treasure Island. The crash occurred at approximately 6:40 p.m. on Saturday, November 27, 2021.

According to investigators, 48-year-old pedestrian Jude Rutkowski was crossing Gulf Boulevard from south to north in the middle of the intersection, not in the designated crosswalk.

A 2007 Dodge Caliber, driven by 45-year-old male, was traveling west bound on Gulf Boulevard when he struck Rutkowski with the front driver’s side of his vehicle.

Rutkowski was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life-threatening injuries.

On Tuesday, December 1, 2021, the Sheriff’s Office announced that Rutkowki died as a result of his injuries.

According to investigators, speed and impairment do not appear to be factors for the driver, however, it appears Rutkowski was impaired at the time of the crash.

The investigation continues.
