updated December 3, 2014

On December 2, 2014, Largo High School officials received information from a student’s mother that her son might be in possession of a gun at school.  The student was quickly located and subsequent to a search, a .22 caliber handgun was found in the student’s backpack. Though the student had ammunition with the gun, it was not loaded.  17 year-old River D. Smith has been arrested for possession of a firearm on school property which is a 3rd degree Felony.

Largo Police Department reports that Smith’s mother received information from an undisclosed source that her son may be in possession of alleged stolen property to include a MacBook computer and a gun.  Mrs. Smith responded to the school and met with officials which lead to the recovery of both items.  The items have been confirmed as being stolen from a recent burglary.  No additional charges have been filed at present and further investigation is on-going regarding the burglary.

The investigation continues.

Here is the email that was sent to parents at about 5:30PM Tuesday evening. An identical voicemail messages was also left.
