An officer from the Largo Police Department arrived on-scene of a crash between a vehicle and a bicyclist at approximately 12:18 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2020.
Largo Fire Rescue crews were requested to respond to the crash scene which was located in the northbound lane of Frontage Road at Roosevelt Boulevard.
Investigators say that based on the preliminary investigation, the bicyclist crossed against the red crosswalk indicator and into oncoming traffic.Â
Investigators say that alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
The bicyclist was transported by ambulance to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with critical injuries.
The crash resulted in the total shutdown of the northbound lanes of Frontage Road along with the right lanes of Roosevelt Blvd.
The roadway has reopened and the investigation is on-going.
Every dat I see bicyclists who want us to treat them like a car and I do, however if the light is red, them they just ride through it. Either follow the road rules or DON”T ride on the road!!
A lot we don’t know. Where was the cyclist? Where was the motorist? What does the “crossed against the red crosswalk indicator” mean: Was it counting down or was the hand signal solid? And how did the officer make that determination? He wasn’t there. Was it based on the motorist’s statement? Or the cyclist’s? Or witnesses?
It’s journalisticly very risky taking the officer’s word for it, as he really doesn’t know, not having seen the crash.
