Motorcyclist Killed After Colliding With Hit and Run DUI Driver’s Truck

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) continues to investigate a crash that killed a motorcyclist from Brandon, Florida.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Friday, February 22, 2019 in the eastbound lanes of I-4 east of SR-574.

The motorcyclist, 23 year-old Andy Sanford of Brandon, was traveling eastbound in the inside lane on a 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was behind a 2018 Dodge Ram truck driven by 39 year-old Johnathon Thompson of Ft. Lauderdale.

According to troopers, Sanford attempted to overtake Thompson’s truck and collided with the rear of the truck.

Following the crash, Thomspon left the scene and traveled north on I-75 then turned back southbound on I-75 until stopped by FHP troopers near milepost 268.

Thompson was arrested for leaving the scene of the crash, driving with suspended license, and DUI.

Sanford, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he died from his injuries.
