City of Largo neighborhoods came out this evening to join the Largo Police Department in celebrating the 30th Anniversary of National Night Out.  This year’s event took place at the Largo Mall Target, 10500 Ulmerton Road.

National Night Out is a free event designed to promote awareness, support and participation in anti-crime efforts. The program also encourages contact with neighbors and local law enforcement.

lnom001Events included fingerprinting, bike registration, kid’s safety stations and free document shredding by PROSHRED.  Largo Police Department had a SWAT display and their Mobile Command Vehicle on-site.  Largo Fire Department participated by sending Truck 41 and crew to the event.   Also in attendance was the State bomb squad along with their robot and specialized equipment.  In addition, the Pinellas County Sheriff displayed their 33,000 lb armored rescue vehicle.

The introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime”, in 1984 began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.
