The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a drowning incident left one child deceased and another injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2019 when deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office were called to the Wexford Park Apartments located at 8203 Down Royal Rd in Tampa. A family was hosting a pool party in the apartment pool area with approximately 10 children and three adults in attendance.
Two 3-year-old girls were among the children in attendance. While playing in the water, at some point the girls took off their flotation devices.
According to witnesses, by the time adults realized the young girls, who could not swim, had gone under the water, several people rushed into help, pulling the girls from the pool and performing CPR until EMS arrived. Both girls were transported to a local hospital where one of the girls was pronounced deceased. The other girl is in critical condition.
At this time, no one is facing charges.
In his continued effort to promote swimming pool safety, Sheriff Chad Chronister released a PSA earlier this year with important advice for parents.
