Firefighters from East Lake, Safety Harbor, Oldsmar and Palm Harbor Fire Rescue responded to reports of a structure fire at approximately 2:08 p.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2021. The fire was reported at a Shell / Circle K convenience store located 3470 East Lake Road.

Firefighters reported a column of smoke while responding to the scene. Upon arrival they determined the smoke and flames were coming from a vehicle parked at the convenience store and a gas pump. The fire did not involve any of the building structures.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and determined that one adult female died at the scene.

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol say that a 66-year-old Palm Harbor woman operating a 2006 Nissan sedan backed into a gas pump. The impact caused the gas pump to overturn onto Shoi Caballes, a mother of 5, that was pumping gas. She was pinned between the gas pump and her 2018 Honda SUV before the exposed gasoline erupted in flames.

Two children, a boy and a girl, aged 11 and 14 respectively, were initially in the vehicle when it caught fire, then exited the vehicle to try and save their mother.

Jared Pierson, a Good Samaritan, helped the victim’s two children try and fight the fire. When he saw the fire was uncontrollable, using the fire extinguishers located by the gas pumps, he moved the children away from the blaze.

This incident is under investigation by the State
Fire Marshall’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol.
