A stabbing overnight left a man with critical and potentially life-threatening injuries.
Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating a stabbing in unincorporated Largo. The incident occurred at about 1:35 a.m. on May 2, 2020 on the sidewalk in front of the Public Storage located at 16079 U.S. Highway 19 North in Largo.
Deputies initially responded to the Public Storage business for an armed person call. When deputies arrived, they discovered one male victim with multiple stab wounds to his upper body. Investigators say that the victim and another male were walking on the sidewalk in front of the Public Storage business when they were approached from behind by 51-year-old William Lumar.
According to detectives, Lumar was yelling he wanted to kill someone and that the two males needed to clear the sidewalk. As the two males were clearing the sidewalk, the 65-year-old victim tripped and fell and Lumar began stabbing him multiple times. Lumar then fled the scene on foot.
Detectives say the two males were unknown to Lumar.
At about 2:56 a.m. on May 2, 2020, deputies located Lumar and took him into custody. Lumar was found with blood on his clothing and in possession of a knife with blood on it. Lumar was positively identified as the suspect in the stabbing.
Lumar was transported to the Sheriff’s Administration Building located at 10750 Ulmerton Road in Largo to be interviewed by detectives. Lumar denied involvement in the incident.
Lumar was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree and transported to the Pinellas County Jail.
The victim is in critical condition and detectives are searching for next of kin.
