St. Petersburg Homicide Investigation Underway After Intruder Shot by Homeowner

ST. PETERSBURG — On April 18, 2026, at approximately 12:20 a.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired in the area of 2nd Avenue North, where they located a 46-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wounds. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

According to preliminary findings, the incident began when the man crashed a vehicle in the area for reasons that remain under investigation. After the crash, he fled on foot and entered the backyard of a residence in the 3000 block of 2nd Avenue North.

Investigators say the man attempted to force entry into the home through the rear of the property. The homeowner, who was asleep at the time, was awakened by the repeated attempts to break in. Authorities report the homeowner ordered the man to leave, but he continued attempting to gain entry.

The homeowner then fired at the suspect, striking him. No other individuals were injured during the incident. Three adults and one child were inside the residence at the time.

The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

As of now, no charges have been filed against the homeowner. The investigation remains ongoing.
