Investigators say the juvenile was operating an e-dirtbike westbound on 70th Avenue in the travel lanes when the crash occurred. At the same time, a 1995 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck, driven by 71-year-old Michael Smith of Pinellas Park, was also traveling westbound.

Police determined the pickup truck struck the rear of the e-dirtbike while both vehicles were in motion. Investigators noted the e-dirtbike was not equipped with lights, and the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The juvenile suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Smith remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Police said neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the crash.

The investigation remains active.

In a statement following the crash, the Pinellas Park Police Department reminded residents that e-dirtbikes are not legal to operate on Florida roadways. Under Florida law, e-bicycles must be equipped with operational pedals and cannot exceed 28 mph. Police also encouraged riders to use appropriate safety equipment, including helmets and lights, and to follow all traffic laws.

Anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact the Pinellas Park Police Department.
