Woman Killed After Being Struck by a Falling Palm Tree on Egmont Key

First responders were dispatched to Egmont Key Park at approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2018.

Multiple people reported that a woman on the island suffered a significant injury and was bleeding and unconscious.

A team from the Eckerd College Search and Rescue Team was first to arrive and performed CPR until they could transport her to awaiting paramedics from the Tierra Verde Fire District.

Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office arrived notified the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as that part of the island is under their jurisdiction.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office detectives have confirmed that 20 year-old Isabel Melendez died as a result of her injuries.

Deputies say Melendez was struck by a falling palm tree while lying in a hammock. She was pronounced deceased at  Bayfront Health St Petersburg.

Her next of kin has been notified and police say her death does not appear to be suspicious.
