Woman Struck and Killed While Attempting to Walk Across Seminole Boulevard

Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team are investigating a fatal vehicle vs pedestrian crash in Seminole.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2017.

According to investigators, a 68-year-old man from Lutz was driving his 2000 Toyota 4-Runner southbound in the median lane of Seminole Boulevard approaching the intersection of 53rd Avenue North.

A Palm Harbor resident, identified as 23-year-old Kala Gombos, stepped into the roadway and was crossing Seminole Boulevard traveling eastbound. Investigators say Gombos stepped in front of a 2000 Toyota 4-Runner.  The driver was unable to stop or take evasive action before striking the pedestrian with his vehicle.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Gombos to St. Petersburg General Hospital where she died from her injuries.  The driver of the 4-Runner was not physically injured in the crash.

Investigators say Gombos was not utilizing a nearby designated pedestrian crosswalk at the time of the crash.

Neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the crash.

The investigation continues.
