Deputies Arrest Man Days After Stealing 9 Week-Old Yorkie From Largo Pet Store.

On Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at approximately 2:00 PM, a male subject entered All About Puppies located which is located at 7190 Ulmerton Road in Largo, Florida.

The subject was spending time with a new arrival to the store, a 9 week-old Yorkie puppy. Employees noticed the puppy was missing after the man left the store. Surveillance video captured him placing the puppy into the front of his clothing and possibly under a sweater.

In an attempt to identify the subject, Largo Police Department (LPD) posted a photo on their Facebook page. LPD also reported that the individual was observed entering an older model, white truck when he left the location.

IONTB has discovered information that 38 year-old Wayne Junior Barfield was arrested by Pinellas Deputies on Friday, January 15, 2016.  According to arrest documentation, a deputy spotted Barfield riding a bicycle near the intersection of 62nd Avenue N and 34th Street in Unincorporated St. Petersburg.  Barfield tried to evade the deputy and ride through the nearby Palm Haven Mobile Home Park.  He was finally apprehended by other deputies that were responding to the area.  Barfield already had an existing warrant out for his arrest for failing to show for a court appearance in a previous charge of not having a valid drivers license.

He was also charged with resisting an officer without violence (obstruction) due to the fact he was evading the deputy.  For his suspected role in the theft of the Yorkie, he was charged with retail theft.  The value of the 9 week-old Yorkie was $1,600.

IONTB contacted All About Puppies this evening in an attempt to obtain any further information regarding the status of the puppy.  The employee was unaware that an arrest was made in the case and reported that the puppy had definitely not been returned to the store. They expressed their concern for the young and tiny puppy due to the frequent and special care that it required.

Barfield has a length criminal record in both Pinellas and Pasco County and was incarcerated for many years by the Florida Department of Corrections as seen below.  The previous charges included cocaine possession, cocaine sale, aggravated assault and battery on first responders, grand theft, grand theft auto, and burglary.
