Crash this afternoon in Tampa leaves one motorcyclist dead and another with serious injuries

Crash this afternoon in Tampa leaves one motorcyclist dead and another with serious injuries.
The crash occurred at about 4:05 PM on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the intersection of Florida Avenue and Palm Drive in Hillsborough County.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 69 year-old Manuel T. Perez of Tampa was traveling eastbound on Palm Drive, stopped at the southbound lanes of Florida Avenue.
The two motorcyclists involved were traveling southbound on Florida Avenue at a high rate of speed in the left lane.




Perez attempted to complete a left turn onto Florida Avenue and entered the southbound lanes.  He failed to observe both motorcycles and entered their path of travel.

A 19 year-old Cody Layne Newsom of Kissimmee was traveling on the first motorcycle, a 2009 Kawasaki, and struck the left front of Perez’s 2003 Chevy Van.  The motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries and died on-scene.

20 year-old Connor Waldron of Kissimmee was traveling on a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle and struck the left rear of the van.  He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital with serious injuries.

According to FHP, both motorcyclists were wearing helmets at the time of the crash and alcohol did not appear to have been involved.

Charges are listed as pending in the crash as FHP continues their investigation.
