Dunedin Man Arrested After Shooting Pregnant Girlfriend and False Reporting of Home Invasion

Updated: July 21, 2018

Pinellas detectives have arrested 19-year-old Charles Tenpenny for shooting his pregnant girlfriend on July 18, 2018, and falsely reporting a homeĀ invasion.

The original incident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. in the 1100 block of New York Avenue, just north of Main Street.Ā Ā Deputies were called to a residence located 1144 New York Avenue, Apartment A in Dunedin, for a report of a home invasion.

When deputies arrived they found the resident, 18-year-old Naomi Rosado, suffering from a gunshot wound.Ā  Tenpenny told detectives that he was in the home with Rosado when anĀ unidentified male subject wearing all black walked into their home throughĀ their unlocked front door.

Tenpenny said the male suspect was armed with a handgun when he shot RosadoĀ and fled on foot northbound along New York Avenue.Ā  Rosado was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to detectives, through the course of their investigation, theyĀ learned that Tenpenny had tried to commit suicide at a residence in Dunedin onĀ Friday, July 20, 2018. Detectives and deputies responded to the home and madeĀ contact with Tenpenny after friends stopped him from hanging himself.

Tenpenny told detectives that he was distraught over accidentally shooting his pregnant girlfriend, 18-year-old Naomi Rosado.

Detectives interviewed Tenpenny who said that on July 18, 2018, he and RosadoĀ were in their home located at 1144 New York Avenue in Dunedin, when they hadĀ an argument over a Facebook friend request Naomi had received.

Investigators say that Tenpenny admitted to pointing a loaded 9mm Glock handgun with a laser sight atĀ Rosado while she was on the couch.

Tenpenny claimed that he was turning off the laser sight on the handgun whenĀ the gun accidentally went off. Detectives say a single round went throughĀ Rosado’s hand and struck her in the eye.

Tenpenny told detectives he was scared so he threw the handgun and theĀ ammunition casing over the backyard fence into a wooded area.

Tenpenny then called 911 and tried rendering aid to Rosado.

When deputies arrived, Tenpenny lied and told investigators that anĀ unidentified intruder dressed in all black shot Rosado and fled on foot.

Tenpenny admitted to dealing in illegal drugs and said he always has a gun onĀ him for protection.

Detectives say they returned to Tenpenny’s home on New York Avenue andĀ recovered a Glock handgun.

Detectives arrested Tenpenny and transported him to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.

Tenpenny was charged with one count of Aggravated Assault and one count of False Report of a Crime. Tenpenny was also Baker Acted and will receive aĀ mental health evaluation.

Detectives say Rosado is approximately 20 weeks pregnant and she remains inĀ critical but stable condition at a local hospital.

The investigation continues.
