Bicyclist Seriously Injured After Being Struck by a Vehicle on Park Street in Seminole

Pinellas deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are investigating a vehicle versus bicycle crash involving serious bodily injury to the bicyclist.

The crash occurred at about 1:03 pm on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 on Park Street at 62nd Avenue in Seminole, Florida.

According to investigators, 60-year-old Robert Peel of Pinellas Park was riding his bicycle near the outside edge of the pavement southbound on Park Street just north of 62nd Avenue.

Deputies say 59-year-old John Ludwig of Largo was also traveling southbound in his 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser when Ludwig’s vehicle struck Peel’s bicycle from behind.

Investigators say according to witnesses, Ludwig’s PT Cruiser had drifted off the road prior to impact with Peel.

The accident caused serious bodily injuries to Peel. He was transported to
Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

Deputies say Ludwig was not injured as a result of the crash and that he appeared to be having complications due to a medical condition, he was transported to St Petersburg General Hospital.

Neither alcohol nor speed appears to be factors in the crash.
